Definitions

A foundation is “the legal act through which one or more individuals or legal entities decide irrevocably to allocate property, rights or resources for a non-profit making activity of public interest”. French legislation: Section 18, Law No. 87-571 of 23 July 1987 on the promotion of philanthropy.

In the University of Strasbourg Foundation :

  • the “legal entities” are the University and the University Hospitals of Strasbourg, the founding bodies
  • “the non-profit making activity of public interest” is the development of the University and its partners

The University of Strasbourg Foundation is deemed to be a scientific cooperation foundation according to the legal regime opted for by its founding bodies, the University and the University Hospitals of Strasbourg.  As such it embodies all of the following qualities:

  • Altruistic: it serves the University and the University Hospitals of Strasbourg
  • Independent: it has its own legal statutes, decision-making bodies and operational departments
  • Ready to listen: its Board of Directors consists of representatives of the Universit and the University Hospitals and of external qualified personalities
  • Responsive: the Foundation, a body set up under French private Law, became operational in just under a year
